Stalin's New Status In Russia

Stalin's profile on the poll's website does not shy away from his crimes
In a nationwide poll that had been conducted over a span of about six months, Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin had been voted as Russia's third most popular historical figure among the 500
candidates that Russians could vote for despite the famine and purges that marked his rule. St. Alexander Nevsky and Pyotr Stolypin took the first and second positions respectively.

The competition, inspired by the similar British competition, 100 Greatest Britons, had been a project by the Russian TV channel Rossiya, launched to find the "Name of Russia" – the one Russian from history who should go down as a national symbol or the nation's biggest hero by voting via the Internet, radio and television. It drew more than 50 million votes in a nation of 143 million.

I feel that this article shows us how the views of various people are able to differ widely no matter the situation and that with time, people's views can change. For example, Stalin had caused millions of innocent people to lose their lives if suspected of disloyalty though his paranoid and brutal regime while even those who had managed to avoid death had to suffer from starvation and exhaustion constantly, showing us his willingness to execute his own people, robbing the Russia of many bright and promising minds. Despite this, a large number of Russians have supported and voted for him in the competition while some disagree fully with his actions. In the past, there may have been more people compared to now that have been against Stalin and have hated him for his actions, however, as time passes, their thoughts and views change as they realise that Stalin and his rule may have benefitted Russia, allowing it to be the way it is now.
Also, I feel that this article shows us that with bad, there is also good based on how the people have supported him in the polls. Even though Stalin's actions were harsh and cruel with lives lost, it is no lie that under his rule, Russia had improved from its previous state greatly after being badly affected from war with the introduction of industralisation, strengthening and resulting in the growth of Its economy, therefore explaining why the people may have chosen to support him.
